History
William Blount founded National Marker Company in 1934 as a response to changing times. 1934 was the middle
of the Great Depression. That might seem like the wrong time to start a company, but our founding was a
result of the times. The Empire State Building had just been completed and big buildings were becoming
more common. Building fires like at the Ohio State Penitentiary that killed 318 people in 1930 raised fire
safety awareness. Building codes were updated. People looked for an answer. William Blount began National
Marker as a screen printer of fire warning signs and extinguisher labels in Pawtucket, RI.
In the years to come, National Marker Company continued to innovate, grow and adapt. When our nation
transformed itself through the industrial buildup supporting WWII, our product line began to expand.
For many years into the 1980's National Marker specialized in printing for retail stores. Then times
changed again. The 1980 Recession curbed retail spending at a time when work place safety awareness was
heightening. Once again, National Marker innovated, adapted and grew. We shifted our focus and expanded our
line of safety identification.
From the years between 1989 and 1998, National Marker was integrated into Cranston Print Works, the nation's
oldest textile printing company. Then in 1998, National Marker was spun off. Since that time, National
Marker has invested, evolved and grown. Today our state-of-the-art digital printing capability sets NMC
apart. We have emerged as a national leader of safety identification. In fact, you've probably seen our
products and not even realized it.
We have weathered many changes since our founding in 1934. Our culture is our strength — it dictates how we
care for our customers and each other. We know we have more storms to weather, but National Marker is better
positioned now than ever before to keep growing.

Top Ten Reasons To Work At National Marker
- 10.
- Our Mascott: Mr. U•Do — “Don't take yourself seriously.” You can't walk into a room at National Marker and not see Mr. U•Do somewhere. We have an 8' tall mural of him surfing in our main conference room. It's just impossible to take yourself too seriously with Mr. U•Do around!
- 9.
- Location — Rhode Island is not actually an island. But the Ocean State does boast that every home in RI is less than 30 minutes from the water making this tiny little chop of land a popular destination for beach goers and fisherman. Rhode Island sits a short drive between Boston and New York making all that those metro areas have to offer easily accessible. Excellent skiing in the winter can be had just a few hours north while our winters are moderated by the warm waters of the Gulf Stream. Located in North Smithfield, RI, minutes from the state capital, National Marker is easy to get to and has plenty of free parking. And there are GREAT places to eat all around us!
- 8.
- Opportunities to Grow and Develop — When we step out of our comfort zone, we grow — as a business, and as people. Our associates are continually encouraged to learn new and better ways of doing things and to bring that knowledge to their jobs. When we do, our work is more rewarding and our company more successful.
- 7.
- Routine. What's That? — “Change is a fact of life at National Marker.” It just is. Printing technologies are advancing. New regulations are constantly being released. People outside our industry find new ways to do things. Most importantly: Our customers' needs are evolving. We strive to take the best tools and the best practices from around the world and apply them to our business. To better serve our customers. To better serve each other.
- 6.
- Access to State-of-the-Art Technology — “Any job is easy of you have the right tools.” At National Marker, our associates work with the latest technology and the best tools. Better tools means less frustration and more rewarding work. Access to state-of-the-art tools also means that our Associates become the best in their business!
- 5.
- Passion of the Leadership — “Don't let it be said that I have more confidence in you than you have in yourself.” None of what we do would be possible without the passion and heart of our leadership. That's where our drive to succeed begins. We aim high.
- 4.
- Recognition — “People deserve respect.” We try very hard to encourage a culture of respect. Recognizing and appreciating each others' good work is one of the most basic ways to show respect. Whether it's our daily ‘shout-out’ on our intranet site, or our Legion of Honor program, or just the way people congratulate each other on a job well done - recognition of good work happens on a daily basis.
- 3.
- Fun Working Environment — “Mark your calendar!” Make no bones about it, we mean business. But that doesn't mean we can't have fun in the process like at our annual costume contest, holiday party and Yankee Swap, summer picnic and more. The parties allow for socializing and keep things light so that the rest of the year we have fun at what we do.
- 2.
- Work / Life Balance — “Work hard. Play hard.” Part of looking out for each other is making sure that our associates remember why they work in the first place. We know that our associates do what they do only with the support from their spouses and children.
- 1.
- Family Feel — It's common for people to comment after their first day at National Marker that it feels like they've been here for years. Our team is welcoming and we have a genuine concern for our colleagues.
